Choosing the Right Breast Implant Size for Your Body

by Martina Gonzalez

Most women who seek breast augmentation are looking for larger breasts. They might also have a desire to make their breasts more proportionate to their body or correct unevenness. Whatever the case may be, it’s extremely important to choose implants that are the right size for your body. You’ll want to have implants in a size that make you happy, while also thinking about other factors like the size of your frame and your lifestyle. It’s common for a woman to enter her plastic surgeon’s office and say, “I want to have a __ cup.” Unfortunately, breast implants aren’t that simple. Read on for a guide on how to choose the perfect implants.

Breast implants are measures in cc sizes. They can go from as small as 100 cc to as large as 1500 cc. You can make mock implant sizes at home by using the Rice Test.

The Rice Test uses rice to create “implants” that you can test out in your own bras and under shirts. Take cut-off pantyhose or plastic baggies and fill them with the rice or other small grains, then tie them off. The conversions below are approximate:

  • 1 cup = 236cc
  • 1/2 cup = 118cc
  • 3/4 cup = 177cc
  • 1/4 cup = 59cc
  • 1/3 cup = 78cc
  • 2/3 cup = 156cc
  • 1/8 cup = 30cc

The Rice Test is a good reference point, but don’t get too caught up in your cc sizing—every woman is different. For example, if two patients are trying to achieve the same size breasts, one might need more cc because she’s starting at as an A cup as opposed to the other woman, who’s a B cup. Moreover, plastic surgeons consider a number of factors when performing breast augmentation, such as your overall height and weight, the size of your ribcage, the elasticity of your skin, and your current breast shape and size.

When you visit your plastic surgeon for a consultation, one of the best things you can do is bring in photographs of the types of breasts you’d like to see on yourself. Pick women that are close to your build. Consider the size, shape, and positioning of the implants. Breasts that are placed higher on the chest and have a round shape tend to look fake, while implants with a slope look more natural. Women like all sorts of implants: fake-looking, natural-looking, and somewhere in between. The choice is yours, and that’s the beauty of plastic surgery.

Your lifestyle should also have an influence on the size of your breast implants. If you’re in the adult entertainment business, for example, larger breasts may fare well for you. But if you work in a conservative industry like finance or law, disproportionate breasts may be distracting or even cause you to lose your credibility—however unfair that may be. You’ll also want to think about your active habits: Do you jog or play sports? Do you have small children? Large breast implants might prove troublesome for people who engage in a lot of physical activity.

Every woman who gets implants wants to get the size right the first time, but it’s far easier to go larger later than to downsize. For this reason, many doctors urge their patients to err on the smaller side. Contact us to schedule a private consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon in your area.
