Breast implants Top United Kingdom Patients’ Plastic Surgery Wishlists

More and more patients with disposable incomes are going under the knife this year. Recent figures showed that more than 50,000 patients turned to plastic surgery to improve their physical appearance in 2013, a 17 percent increase on 2012.

According to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, plastic surgeons performed about 11,135 breast augmentations in 2013, a 13 percent increase on 2012.

The numbers come as a surprise, especially after the recent PIP breast implant scandal, in which patients received toxic leaking breast implants. NHS medical director Sir Bruce Keogh also recently warned the public that the plastic surgery industry is “a crisis waiting to happen,” according to International Business Times United Kingdom.

The year 2013 also saw a dramatic increase, of 41 percent, in the number of liposuction procedures, over non-invasive treatments that were often proven ineffective.

“I have seen an increase recently, especially in the last six months,” West Sussex based plastic surgeon Baljit Dheansa told International Business Times United Kingdom. “Finances are stabilizing, people are finding jobs and they are not affected by financial adversity.

“People are now having treatments that maybe they had wanted to do before 2008 but now have the confidence to do it. They have not just decided overnight. Patients that I have seen say to me they have been thinking about a treatment for a long time.”

More and more men are undergoing plastic surgery procedures than ever before. However, women are still undergoing far more operations than men. In 2013, women received 45,365 procedures, while men underwent 4,757 operations.

Dheansa attributes this trend to the changes that women’s bodies undergo during pregnancy.

“Confidence is important for women and I have performed a lot of tummy tucks because I think it gives women the confidence to wear that swimming costume on holiday and go to the gym,” Dheansa told International Business Times United Kingdom. “Rightly or wrongly, people want to look good in their clothes and enjoy holidays and after pregnancy, there can be loose skin and a separation of tummy muscles. Unfortunately, that can’t be reversed just by running.”

Along with an increase in the number of procedures, plastic surgeons also saw a drastic hike in the number of complaints from patients following treatments.

Chair of the Independent Healthcare Advisory Services, Sally Taber commented that as the demand for procedures dramatically increased, so did the number of patients left dissatisfied with the results of their treatments.
