Breast Size and Back Pain: What to Know

by Marisa Amorasak

If you were born with very large breasts, chances are you've experienced related pain in your back, neck, and shoulders. Even though your spine is very strong and designed to support your build, it can become strained under the weight of large breasts. Similarly, bra straps can dig into shoulders and cause painful indentations and forced slouching. Back pain is a common side effect of large breasts, but luckily there are steps you can take to decrease and alleviate the pain while still maintaining your feminine shape.

Poor Posture Due to Large Breasts

Carrying around large breasts is like carrying a large bag: after you get tired of carrying it, it's easy to start to give in to the weight of the bag and slouch into it. This causes the shoulders to slump forward, and overtime the spine may become curved. A study in Turkey showed that in a group of 100 women, those with D cup breast sizes and above had more spine curvature than those with smaller breasts. Beyond an altered appearance, spine curvature can lead to heart defects and kidney failure in later life.

Although poor posture can contribute to back pain, good posture won't necessarily eliminate it. Women with large breasts and good posture can get back pain after sitting or standing for just a few minutes, and many of these womens' lifestyles require sitting or standing for more than a short while. Life is demanding, and back pain due to large breasts shouldn't hold you back from it.

Undergarments for Large Breasts

Undergarments can make a huge difference in the way your body supports the weight of your breasts. Sports bras have long been popular options for women with large breasts because they offer a good deal of support. After all, they're designed to be worn during vigorous activity and so the breasts are kept contained, supported, and comfortable at the same time. The straps are usually thick and the material shock absorbent, so the shoulders bear less weight. Many women with large breasts also like sports bras because it minimizes the appearance of their bust.

If you seek something that will define your shape more than sports bras, there are also bras on the market that are specially designed for women with large breasts seeking support. Beyond having large cups, these bras often have thicker straps and are developed to distribute the weight of the breasts evenly across the shoulders. The problem with these specialty bras is that they are oftentimes less sexy than their daintier sisters. So while they perform their duties, they aren't something you'd want someone else seeing.

Breast Reduction

Breast reconstruction involves removing excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts to make them smaller in mass, lighter, and more proportionate to your body. Breast reduction is the only permanent solution to back pain caused by large breasts. With smaller breasts, you don't have to worry about buying special undergarments or not enjoying daily activities due to your back pain. In a study of 179 women with very large breasts, half of them reported chronic upper back pain. After undergoing breast reduction surgery, only 10% suffered from back pain. Women get breast reduction for aesthetic reasons, too. They may have pendulous breasts with nipples that point downward or they simply may be dissatisfied with the appearance of their perceived overly large breasts.

If your large breasts are posing a problem in your life, it may be time to consider breast reduction surgery. If you'd like to learn more about breast reduction surgery or you wish to schedule a private consultation with a plastic surgeon in your area, contact us today!
