Tennis Star Simona Halep Talks Breast Reduction at Wimbledon

by Marisa Amorasak

Despite losing a hard fought match against Serena Williams at Wimbledon, rising Romanian tennis star Simona Halep looked like a winner in many respects. After the match, the 19 year-old Halep solidified her role as a plastic surgery poster girl by crediting breast reduction surgery for helping her climb the Women’s Tennis Association rankings.

It was three years ago, at the 2008 French Open, that Halep's size 34DD breasts started attracting plenty of attention. Hardly flattered, Halep found her ample chest actually inhibiting her development as a tennis player. As she told the New York Daily News:

"My ability to react quickly was worse, and my breasts made me uncomfortable," Halep said. "It's the weight that troubles me. My breasts made me uncomfortable when I play."

Large breasts led over a hundred thousand women to get breast reduction surgery last year, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Disproportionately large breasts can cause major physical issues, like severe back pain and bad posture. For female athletes like Halep, the problems are only more prevalent as they are constantly engaging in high-intensity physical activity. The weight of large breasts, as Halep noted, can act as a serious disadvantage. And when your sport is your career, you don’t want anything holding you back.

Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The plastic surgeon removes mainly excess fat and tissue, but can also remove portions of skin if necessary. The breasts are also repositioned to accommodate their new size. The procedure can take up to four hours, depending on how much material needs to be removed from the breasts. The healing time for breast reduction is known to be quite long—about two weeks to return to regular activities, but six to eight months to see full results.

Simona Halep opted for breast reduction surgery in 2009. In 2010, she returned to the French Open with 34C breasts. Halep lost during the second round of Wimbledon to Serena Williams. But that doesn’t mean that Halep’s career is going downhill—since her 2009 breast reduction, she’s climbed the rankings by 450 spots to sit at number 58.

In addition to the physical inhibitions to large breasts, it’s likely that Halep experienced mental discomfort with the size of her breasts. Tennis is a mobile sport that involves dashing from one side of the court to the other, and using both arms to swing. Halep, who claimed she was “uncomfortable,” may have been addressing her self-consciousness regarding her breasts.

You don’t have to be an athlete to comprehend the limitations and negative effects that disproportionately large breasts can have on oneself. If you find that routine activities like walking, standing, running, or carrying things have become a hassle due to your breast size, you may want to consider breast reduction surgery.
